Studying at the HEI Lab

The Hydro-Environmental Informatics (HEI) Lab contributes to Long-term land management for disaster reduction, environment, and utilization by big data analysis such as land and meteorological information.

What is the HEI Lab?

The Hydro-Environmental Informatics (HEI) Lab aims to quantify water/sediment disaster risks and develop efficient disaster prevention/mitigation measures. In developing the prevention/mitigation measures, we especially focus on diverse values which differ depending on the region. There are concerns that natural disasters caused by climate change will become more serious worldwide, suggesting that adaptation research will become increasingly important. Japan is one of the most disaster-prone nations: e.g., regarding sea level rise, over 50 % of all beaches in Japan will disappear if it rises by 30 cm. The research topic of each student is decided through discussions between the supervisor and the student.

Admission

Students, wishing to study the undergraduate, master course and/or doctoral course, need to take a graduate school exam of subjects that your prospective supervisor is in charge. For details, please refer to:

In addition, Tohoku University actively promotes and provides support for creating a better environment where both genders learn and work together: http://alice.eng.tohoku.ac.jp/english/

Seminar

The HEI Lab holds D seminars (for Doctoral course students), M seminars (for Master course students), and Lab seminars (for all HEI students). D and M seminars are conducted jointly with the Hydro-Environmental System Lab, Tsunami Engineering Lab, and Disaster Geo-informatics Lab. At the joint seminars, each student makes presentations on his/her research project two to three times a year. These seminars aim to obtain presentation skills to explain his/her research, develop logical thinking ability, and acquire research analysis techniques.

Participation in conferences

Lab students are expected to make presentations on their research results at domestic conferences. With improvement of presentation skills and research results, they will participate in a higher level of domestic and/or international conference. Traveling expenses to attend domestic and international conferences are supported by the Lab.

Events at the HEI Lab

The Lab holds a welcome party, an outdoor party (Imoni-kai), a farewell party, as well as joining sports events such as baseball, softball and futsal tournaments.
